“Molecule Making” meets “Device Making” meets “Translation”

Prof. Dipanjan Pan

PhD, FRSC, FAIMBE, FAHA, FACC · Principal Investigator

Professor Dipanjan Pan is the Dorothy Foehr Huck & J. Lloyd Huck Chair Professor in Nanomedicine at The Pennsylvania State University. After a formative period at GE Global Research, he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned tenure in 2017, before joining Penn State in 2022. Prof. Pan leads the Laboratory for Materials in Medicine.

His research sits at the convergence of chemistry, materials science, engineering, and medicine, with a focus on translating fundamental discoveries into technologies for molecular diagnostics, imaging, drug and gene delivery, artificial blood, and responsive biomedical systems. A central philosophy of his laboratory is to merge “molecule making” with “device making,” advancing innovations from mechanistic discovery through prototyping, validation, intellectual property, licensing, and commercialization.

His translational portfolio includes more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, numerous patents, and five biotechnology companies. Professor Pan also serves as the Huck Institutes’ Director for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystems.

Mission & vision

The Pan Laboratory develops materials, molecular technologies, and devices at the convergence of chemistry, materials science, engineering, and medicine. We seek to understand biological problems deeply enough to invent new solutions and engineer those discoveries toward meaningful clinical and societal impact. Our work spans fundamental nanomaterials, molecular recognition, biosensing, imaging, drug and gene delivery, responsive materials, and point-of-care technologies.

Across these diverse areas, one philosophy connects our research:

  1. Discover
  2. Design
  3. Build
  4. Validate
  5. Translate

Impact

With a demonstrated track record of translating academic research to the market and the clinic, and working closely with clinicians, we strive to diminish the gap between exploratory science and clinical research and bring technologies from bench to bedside.

InnSight Technology, Inc.

Co-founded in 2014 with Dr. Leanne Labriola (Carle Ophthalmologists) to develop novel ophthalmic devices for unmet needs in clinical ophthalmology.

KaloCyte, Inc.

Co-founded in 2015 with Dr. Allan Doctor (WUSM/UMD) and Dr. Phil Spinella (WUSM) to develop next-generation synthetic blood for trauma.

Vitruvian Bio

University-based start-up founded on the group's nanomedicine platforms.
